This Liverpool win v Everton in '89 will make you wish John Barnes was still playing - Football Shirt Collective

Everton hosted Liverpool in the summer of 1989 in a game that they scored 1st but went on to lose 3-1 due to the brilliance of Rush and Barnes.

Here is what we learnt.

Bruce Grobbelar went all Manuel Almunia

Mike Newell opened the scoring for Everton latching onto a through ball and his 1st touch took it beyond Liverpool goalie Bruce Grobbelar, who was sprinting outside the area.  The flat caps worn by the celebrating Everton fans were class.

John Barnes scored a bullet header

But the lead didn’t last long as John Barnes equalised with a bullet header from a cross from the right.

Ian Rush scored a tap in

Barnes turned provider when his run and cross from the left led to a tap in for Ian Rush.  The way he twined the defender reminded me of Douglas Costa for Bayern Munich.

Neville Southall made himself big in goal

Ian Rush’s 2nd goal was a bit lucky.  Neville Southall made himself big but Rush’s shot deflected off him and over the defender into the goal.
