Nightshade Chronicles
review 1: Imaginative and endearing, this is one of those juvenile fantasy novels that is enjoyable at any age. The characters are just human enough to be relatable to the reader, yet they are still rats.I have had my eye on this series for some time, and when I saw the Kindle edition of this book available for free, I had to have it. It only took me a few days to finish it, and now my daughter is reading it.I hope the rest of the series is as enjoyable as this first story!
review 2: This probably deserves 3.5 stars. There is a lot to like about this book. The world building is beautifully done; the voice seems to really fit the type of story; and the characters are varied and likable, maybe too likable. The "good guys" were good, with little or no faults. The "bad guys"
... more were bad, with no redeeming qualities or anything that made me empathetic toward them. Also, the storyline flowed too smoothly and easily, the heroes escaping death or capture by timely, convenient means. You know how when you read a book and you think to yourself, "If only she had done THIS it would have worked out so much easier,"? Well, that is not truly what we want when we read. We want the struggle. We want to see the main character come close to his goal only for it to be snatched away, multiple times (followed by a satisfying ending). Sadly, that is where this story falls short. A nice story, but not very exciting. less

My Ten year old boy really loved this book and can't wait for the sequel to come out this fall '11.
