review 1: If you are thinking this story about rats is similar to Watership Down or Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, you will be mistaken. I enjoyed the book although I deeply dislike real rats. The characters are fairly two dimensional. The bad guys are bad and the good guys are good and the fights are between, you guessed it, the good guys and the bad guys. Still, it's a decent quick light read, if such are your tastes.
review 2: This has a very inventive world underneath our own. The rats definitely have a little bit in common with the Secret of Nihm, which I also loved. However, for all the interesting characters, nothing really goes wrong for the rats of Nightshade City. Yes, there is one incident, but that was used as a rallying point, not as anything more than
... morea page of sorrow. I like a bit more conflict in my stories, or at least a bit of struggle shown in the story. I was not fond of the roaming POV. At least it mostly changed at paragraph blocks, but there was a bit of author intrusion that I wasn't entirely comfortable with. Finally, the book says it is for ages nine and higher, but this story talks about issues of rape, slavery, alcoholism, and fascism. There are also a few scenes with semi-graphic discussions of eyes being ripped out and faces carved open. Yeah, it is great for details and fits perfectly with the story, but I'm not sure I agree with the recommended age. less

Author showed solid writing skills, but my boys and I could never really get into this story.

Reminded me of Redwall, Nihm, and Watership Down all mixed together. I loved :)
