review 1: This being my first novel of this hailed classic Swedish author i knew what to expect. He is known for writing intelligently about the issues of his times, his style of writing. The first part of the novel was very slow, not very interesting. After 30 pages it suddenly became a strong, bold novel critical of the society, its old christan based morals. Its a very modern novel, for one that came out in 1901. He had a slow but a strong writng style that he used to say alot in a short novel. He is also a very urban writer too apparently, he wrote often in the novel about how Stockholm grew over time, how it looked. It took me vividly back to a whole different time.Something always appealed to me about this author, his reputation seemed like a Swedish Albert Camus theme wise and i... more got that from him.
review 2: It's probably good to know something more about the author before reading the book as "Martin Birck's Youth" is partly autobiographical. Well, I didn't know about it and for me book was very interesting - it made me think about life goals, meaning of ambitions, meaning of love - all these important things in our life that we usually don't have enough time to think about.Martin - the main character - is probably not a unique man, maybe more melancholic and decadent as that were the signs of his times (19th/20th century). But the main problems of the main character stay unchanged and are universal. The story is well-crafted - from the times of childhood to the maturity of the main character. less

Väldigt vackert skrivet om hans tidiga uppväxtår. Resten engagerade desto mindre.
