review 1: I really enjoyed this book. If possible, I'd recommend reading it in French, as the prose is quite beautiful. I was completely taken away and captivated by the first few pages and I really had a hard time putting the book down. I found myself very angry at times with Madame M., but I guess that's a good book when characters make you feel such strong emotions.Do not expect too much about the war or that time period, as WWII is merely here in the background. This book is rather about "painful" topics such as female sterility, a child taken away from its mother, jealousy, despair, unlikely friendships and lovers. I would have given the book 4 stars up until literally the last 3 pages…that just blew me away! And that made it go to 5 stars, as I was very satisfied by the endi... moreng. Don't spoil yourself by reading the last page. I highly recommend it.
review 2: Gelezen in het Nederlands' 'de vertrouweling'Boeken die beloftevol beginnen, langzaam inzakken en dan helemaal de mist ingaan zijn de ergste. Ook deze keer bleef ik doorlezen in de hoop terug te vinden wat me aanvankelijk deed doorlezen, maar dit boek bleek toch een teleurstelling te zijn. De verhaallijn is zwak en vergezocht, de handelingen van de personages zijn totaal ongeloofwaardig, het gebruik van WO II als achtergrond voegt niets toe aan de essentie van het boek. Onvruchtbaarheid, draagmoederschap, jaloezie, liefde,verraad, wraak... geen enkel thema wordt volwaardig uitgewerkt. Wat overblijft is een chaos aan vertelperspectieven en handelingen waarin de lezer verveeld en verloren achterblijft. less
