Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

Title: Shiver
Author: Maggie Stiefvater
Series: The Wolves of Mercy Falls
Date Started: December 18
Date Finished: December 21
Format: ebook from the digital library

For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf–her wolf–is a chilling presence she can’t seem to live without. Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. In summer, a few precious months of being human . . . until the cold makes him shift back again. Now, Grace meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away. It’s her wolf. It has to be. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human–or risk losing himself, and Grace, forever.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. The time where I break all of my self-imposed reading list rules and read everything I can get my hands on. And what usually happens in this case is I kick some books off my reading list, not only because I finish them but because they’re also part of a series and I didn’t like book 1. And Shiver just became one of those books.

I really wanted to like Shiver. The concept of the book was interesting, girl got attacked by wolves when she was younger, was saved by one of the wolves who’s been watching her ever since, and he can only become human every so often – usually when it’s warm. And the wolves who do turn human don’t have many years to do it. But the execution of this novel was just…slow. It takes a while for everything to be set up. At the beginning there’s a lot of back and forth between the present and the past. And Sam’s character…I don’t know about you, but when I read wolf books I kind of want a dark, mysterious guy as the wolf. Not someone who is very timid. Although I have to admit the fact that he likes to read is a gigantic plus,

Final Rating: 2 out of 5 stars. Pacing was slow. The characters were mediocre. And there wasn’t much of a climax. The ending though, if I was more inclined, would have me reaching for book 2, but my new resolution for the coming year is to not read series if I didn’t like them.
