Is this thing on?

Greetings! I am the one they call Ross, for that is my name. I’ll start by saying that I’m not the most loquacious chap, so I’ll keep this short and sweet, and I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves. Show, don’t tell, right?

Once upon a time, 11-year-old me nagged his mum to buy him something called a Warhammer 40,000 Paint Set, and 20 years later this grown-ass man is still painting toy soldiers. While I’ve never been the most prolific hobbyist, I’ve been told I’m pretty good at this painting lark, so I’ve dabbled here and there, painting a little of this, and a little of that. I haven’t had a fully painted army since my Uni days, many moons ago, and I’m one of those picky gits that doesn’t like playing with unpainted models, so it’s been a good long while since I’ve had a proper battle. Specialist Games are my comfort zone; painting ten or fifteen models is just about achievable before I get bored or distracted, and I love the narrative of campaign play. The new Necromunda is great fun and I await my loyal Orlocks with barely-contained enthusiasm, and I hope that we’ll be able to get some Necro on here at some point in the future. Bloodbowl and Mordheim are super, and Inq28 looks like a blast. I’ve been too scared to try and make models for it, but we’ll see what happens on that front…

For the first chapter of this blog, like the rest of the guys, I’ll be working on getting some Age of Sigmar stuff in fit and fighting shape. I’ve dipped my toe in the AoS line a couple of times but I’ve never stayed long, painting a Stormcast or two, a handful of Moonclan Grots, and a few Bloodbound, but for this project I’m going to have a go at some Aelves. I’ve been dying for an excuse to paint one of those gorgeous Treelords, so I’ll be starting off with Sylvaneth, and then I’ll see where we go from there.

So allow me to present, if you will, some of the more recent entries on my hobby CV for your consideration.

The biggest project that I’ve been working on for the past couple of years has been a T’au Empire army for 40k. I started this army quite by accident when our Aaronorium gaming group decided to do a weekend of the old 7th edition Kill-Team, and I thought a Pathfinder Kill-Team would be nice and fluffy. Fluffy though they may have been, they were no match for all the Space Marines and Dark Eldar that showed up to murderise them. But a couple of years later, I’ve got about 100 power points-worth painted, and another 100 or so built and staring accusingly with their grey plastic eyes from the display case, and despite all this I still haven’t actually played a game with them. Anyway, here’s a few of the Fire Warriors. I’ve tried to customise each of them in some little way, modifying the helmets or using arms from different kits and stuff. Maybe I’ll do a blog post about the rest of the army down the line.

My most recent painting project has been Garrek’s Reavers from Shadespire. After painting T’au for so long it was a nice change to do some skin and some warmer colours. I haven’t got a chance to play with them yet, but I’ve had a rattle with the Stormcast and it’s a great little game.

I’d forgotten about these chaps until I was scooping up some models to photograph for this post. These Deathwatch Marines were made as character models for a short-lived campaign of the Deathwatch RPG that we did a few years back. I had a lot of fun trying different things with their heads and trying to convey their characters through their faces. It’s weird seeing Space Marines on 25mm bases now.

Anyway, I hope you’ll come back and follow along with us. We look forward to sharing our progress, and please let us know what you think!

Oh, and Happy New Year!

R
