review 1: It was all perfect..Then it's not for about 3 years..They were moving on at least thought they were..Until he had this accident and forgot about everything except her and all that is perfect last three years ago..They love, they hurt, they find each other again..And this time it's forever.“I’m not asking for a second chance with her, Ellie. I’m asking for forever.”I. Love. It. I love her. She's hilarious. She even got me when she sang Elmer Fudd's version of Fire. Can't. Stop. Laughing. She's forgiving yet still hurting so I would always understand but she's really stubborn like him. I have a love-hate relationship with him. Since he was an arse but I'm glad he hit his head so that his heart can finally take over.It was a freaking modern Samson and Delilah and I go... more about crying one second and swooning the next.It was the best amnesia book, well at least for me. “You asked me not long ago what I was going to do when I woke up and remembered the day I fell out of love with you. Well, I don't remember that because it never happened. Lil, I could never fall out of love with you because I never stopped loving you. I've been here like I'm waiting on you to come back to me when I should have been the one going back to you.”
review 2: Second Rate Chances is an amnesia book, and it is very well written and the story itself is very well thought out - which bought it another star. But I was hoping for 'The Vow' done better (that movie with Channing Tatum... er, Tatum Channing... whatevs), and it just wasn't. The formatting was bad, the typos were numerous, and there were things that just didn't jive with me.Samson (Sam) and Delilah (Lil) are the main characters... and already we're in Twinks-ville with the name thing. Anyhow, Sam lives a lucrative and sterile life with a trophy girlfriend (Chloe) and is basically numb to the world. He slips on black ice outside of his high-rise condo, and loses three years of his life.Three years ago, Sam pledged to love Lil eternally. He was a game tester with his two best (homosexual) friends. He had just bought a craftsman cottage with Lil. He doesn't know what happened, but everything he knew, everyone he cared about is no longer a part of his life. His friends hate him. His job is a drag. His 'home' is a void. But everything is the same for Lil - same car, same house, same bestie, same job. He can't figure out why his life with her is gone, and nobody will tell him what happened.**SPOILER** What happened was that Lil got pregnant and miscarried. She went into a terrible depression, shut Sam out, and he let her. He walked. And then he had a three year pity-party, letting whatever happened to him just happen. Which seems a little extreme to me. As someone who had a miscarriage, it just... was irrational, the whole situation here. Now if she were no longer able to have children, if it were cancer or something that would affect their future, that would be one thing. But they weren't even *trying* for a baby. And even after he regained his memory (on Christmas, of course, because this is Twinks-ville), there was no difference between amnesiac Sam and recovered Sam. He was still hunting around his apartment for stuff he should remember the location of, he was finding things that he should remember having bought... it was not done well. And the author SAYS that Sam is different, now, but he took off on Lil (again), didn't call or see her for FOUR days... that's not 'changed Sam' behavior. Neither is dressing in his tux and going to his wedding to Chloe to break up. What is THAT, other than rude to hundreds of guests and really contrived? And then there was the homosexual friendship. I have nothing against gays, but I really don't like it when an author uses them as an 'alternate lifestyle' illustration. That's rude to to do anyone, fictional or not. C'mon.Good concept, badly executed. Two stars. less
