review 1: Honestly, I couldn't stop reading. I read the entire book in two sittings over two days. The text is written in poetic form. The plot and characters are well-developed and the racial/cultural descriptions and dialog are authentic and handled with sensitivity. I highly recommend this book for female middle school readers. Because the text is dense and easy to follow struggling readers could be successful and enjoy the story as well.
review 2: This was a very large book at 517 pages, but was actually pretty easy and quick because the words were seperated into stanzas, so there werent very many words on a page. It was very lyrical, and I really enjoyed the storyline, with a girl,Emma, struggling over many decisions and problems. Definitely different from my u... moresual reading style, but I really did enjoyed it and will have to read some other books by Holly Thompson. less
