review 1: A wonderful story about a man in love, who makes mistakes. But he never stops loving the woman of his dreams or his daughter. His story is unlike any other I have read in my short life. In a way it is sad, while also being hopeful. You hope the entire time that things will turn around for him, that all his dreams come true. But in the true way of life nothing works out the way we want it too.
review 2: This novel is a love letter from a father to a daughter he has not seen in over twenty years, in which he tells her the story of his and her mother's lives. Wyatt Hillyer, the son of parents who have committed suicide on the same day, has a lifelong love for his cousin, Tilda. Against the backdrop of World War II we see how lives are lost, others changed f... moreorever, in the small town of Middle Economy, Nova Scotia. Wyatt's participation in a crime with his uncle, while the centerpiece of the novel, does not seem fully logical, likewise the fathering of his daughter with Tilda. Yet, as with other Novels by Howard Norman, the prose is seductively simple and wonderfully evocative of small-town Canada. less
