review 1: As "horror" fiction, The Dunwich Horror fails miserably for me. It doesn't create tense moments of personal terrifying experiences. On the contrary the reader is provided a sense of comfort all the way by depersonalizing the horror of Wilbur and making it a community experience instead. Even the death of Wilbur is experienced by not one, or two, but three able bodied professors who are "terrified " of this dying creature. From then on the horrors continue to be more and more impersonal, and the book sort of reads like fantasy than anything else. The one event that held some promise of horror in this book was the death of Wilbur's mother but that event is brushed aside with a simple statement. Lovecraft should have used his powers of description on more relatable inst... moreances such as these, instead of humouring the reader's patience by providing detailed accounts of incredulous monsters. The best horror is not simply the unknown, but also the immaterial.
review 2: Honestly this is the first Lovecraft's history that I read, it's short, and works perfectly in the prose, but I thought it missed some details in the characters, perhaps the secret of the success of Lovecraft consists in trust the reader's imagination, perhaps I read it later that's supposed, it's good but doesn't touch any deep fiber in me, I hope with more histories I could appreciate why Lovecraft is an indispensable reference in horror literature. less
