review 1: Anyone who ever thought or believed that Lovecraft was a bad writer needs to read "The Music of Erich Zann" immediately. It's brief, but I believe it is Lovecraft's masterpiece. It's a perfect story and has none of the "purple prose" problems that Lovecraft's detractors harp upon. In fact, I think the story blows anything that Poe wrote out of the water and is surely one of the best, most ideal weird tales ever written.Do yourself a favor and read it now if you haven't already.
review 2: Very atmospheric, loved that there is a focus on the auditory happening, although I'd have prefered a musically more educated description, the decision to have Erich Zann mute with the narrator focusing on his facial expression and Zann's instrument being a viol (the lovely
... moresoft sound of the instrument as contrast to the music played on it, the "antiquity" of it, making him seem even older and far more extravagant). Still, I disliked some of the language, found the choice of "metaphysics" as the narrator's subject of study rather silly (should have been philosophy or theology, maybe even mathematics or physics to "root" him in the "logical realms") less

Great. The only thing that left me cold was the open ending. I guess that's the point?
