review 1: I am not sure if it counts but I listened to the book on CD. One thing I did not know about Grant was that he ultimately became a strong advocate for blacks. He forced the south to adopt the 15th Amendment to the Constitution prior to re-admission to the Union. The booked touched on his drinking more than most biographies. Mr. Brands included a wonderful letter Grant's aide wrote to him about how powerful his sobriety was to him during the war. It never really mentioned his drinking again, did he drink after the war?
review 2: I liked the parts about Grant's activities during the war better than the parts where he was actually President. I don't care about keeping track of the various political intrigues. I think the book could have been shortened by sti
