review 1: Great biography. I knew very little of Grant prior to this book and a lot of what I thought I knew was wrong or distorted. For example, although rumors of his drinking problem persisted throughout much of his life and color his legacy, there is very little actual evidence of it after the early part of his military career, and no evidence that it affected his presidency. Now I will have to read his autobiography.
review 2: Very good book, but my goodness it go to a point where it felt like I was reading War and Peace. Brand should be applauded for his scholarship and the ease in which a reader can get into the book. It was not difficult to read, it was just massive. I would suggest you read this as a series; the first part is a great view into the early failures
... more and trials that made Grant who he became. The middle is all about the conquering hero of the War and the end is about his Presidency and late life. less

A combo of the civil war history and how Grant became so successful after failing at everything else

Honestly I thought there was more about the battle than the man and should have rated it lower

A good book on the civil war and Grant but not the best biography of Grant.
