review 1: not up to the high standards of previous Olivia books (which tend to be very inspiring, entertaining, and droll). I can see why other reviewers have pointed out issues about Olivia's dream of adoption and dislike of her peers; however, I'm not sure children would be as astute as their parents in their readings. More concerning for me is the lack of compelling plot and Falconer's signature wit...Is the rightfully beloved series losing steam? I sincerely hope not.
review 2: The indomitable spirit of Olivia shines forth again. I love how true to life she is to little girls I've known who have a great sense of self-esteem, a hilarious facility with language, a belief that they can do anything, and a fashion sense that doesn't stop. Yes, the usually feminist Olivia
... moredoes end up choosing a more predictable route at the end, but then, the way that she does it so genuinely shouts "Olivia!" that I had to accept it as valid...and satisfying. (And, I have a grown daughter who you'd think proves loving to wear nothing but pink for those 6 early years is conducive to becoming a feminist.) Besides, a book with a feminist "message" is (almost) as repulsive to me as one with a sexist message. If I think about this book too much, I might just end up giving it another star. less
