review 1: I discovered this book through the "recommendations" here on goodreads.com. Usually anything remotely Sci-Fi isn't my thing but it was impossible to resists a book set in Istanbul so I dove in. I was very pleasantly surprised; not only at the quality of the writing but also with the intricacy of the plot, the engaging characters and the vivid portrayal of Istanbul itself. Turkey's and Istanbul's past are examined as are themes as diverse as future technologies, terrorism, folk legends and relationships. Truly magical with one of the most satisfying endings I have read in a long while.
review 2: Brasyl, River of Gods, and now The Dervish House. McDonald has an awesome talent for taking already alien contemporary cultures and projecting them into a wondrous
... morebut tangible future. Istanbul itself is the most interesting character and revealed as far stranger than the omnipresent nanotech miracles. I spent a lot of time with a dictionary and Wikipedia to parse some of it, (no helpful glossary this time), but by the end of the book the swarm of unfamiliar words established such a distinct atmosphere it was worth the early difficulties. The main action-thriller plotline(s) seems to take a little too long to get together, but the characters' own desires and lives and side-quests are just as interesting, and the finale is suitably terrific. Really good. less
