My Review

This book was unexpectedly great. No offense, book, but honestly, I didn’t expect much from you. I thought you would be a decent read, one that would be a great 3 crown rating, but wow, this packed a punch at the end and I was in deep. Despite having a few issues with it, I would so recommend everyone putting this on their TBR.

Never Apart has such an intriguing premise. I really was so intrigued by the moment that I read the idea that I immediately hit request a copy. It sounded like this crazy twisted Groundhog Day kind of story, and the actual story did not disappoint. The story switches between then and now. In the now part, we have Grace, Ander, and Finn counting down the days until Ander and Grace are murdered again and fall into another parallel world. It is twisty, it is dark, it was so intriguing. The world was done beautifully and wonderfully. I never once sat there and went, but that doesn’t make sense? I thought it was fantastic, and I give so many props to Bernard.

Grace was a very likeable character. I really rooted for her so hard. She did a lot of the right kinds of things for a person in situation. There was no questionable things that had me screaming at her in the horror movie kind of way. I liked her evolution throughout the story as well. She fought with her heart and stuck up for what she believed in.

The side characters were good as well. Both Ander and Finn were intriguing, and I think Bernard did such a fantastic job with Ander’s characterization’s especially. He was real, and his flaws provided such realistic consequences. The other side characters such as Jem were great and developed as well.

Ariel’s ready for her now and then. Perhaps she would have wrote I love you to Eric sooner had she been in Grace’s switching abilities?

I had one main issue with this book: it got boring in the “then” parts. They were needed for a lot of characterization and setting up the situation, but I found that I was just bored and skipping through the then parts. It was just a much slower pacing at that time, and I just wanted to get back to the now parts – which is a common issue I have with most now and then books and I think it might just be a personal thing. I just wanted it to pick up. That last 20% switching back and forth was amazing, but I wish it would have been a little more intriguing as I continued with it before that.

Overall, this book was so intriguing, and I was enthralled until the last moment once it picked up. The only issue I had was that some of the then parts bored me a bit (beginning to notice a pattern just with myself so it might not even be the book’s fault XD), but they were still vital to the story and important characterization. Bernard shines with her fascinating premise, fantastic characterization, and an ending that really was full of edge of your seat twists and turns. I so recommend this book for anyone that is looking for something a little different in YA. Four crowns and an Ariel rating!
