review 1: With a book barely over 200 pages, any discussion of the plot would be a spoiler. I will say that that I liked Mr. McEwan's attempt to dissect Fiona's legal mind-set, which elevated it slightly above the televised legal dramas you can find on any channel. I thought the marriage plot was a little too simplistic and shallow. I didn’t care for the ending. I found I was completely indifferent to their marriage issues & would have preferred to hear how Fiona would atone for her indifference.
review 2: I found this to be a quick and easy read. Both plot lines were interesting and current, but there was something very gentle about the treatment of each. This could have been violent and full of anxiety and tension, but it was, instead, a satisfying yet calm story. It... more might not have as much appeal to a younger reader, but it was interesting to read about a 30 or 35 year marriage between mature people. I will make it a point to try another book by this author. less
