review 1: I often conduct a thought experiment, putting myself 500 years into the future and imagine myself looking back on our 21st Century modern life. Would our legal system look fair? Would our medicine appear sophisticated? Would our social norms appear modern? Would our houses, towns and cities be efficient? Would our fashion look ridiculous or beautiful? This book is a natural thought experiment. It is detailed, insightful and fascinating. It covers topics as broad as their housing and construction, attitudes to women and marriage, diseases and the plague, social organisation and serfdom, plants and animals (particularly domesticated) .. and more and more. It is not dry. It is crammed with facts, but not like a textbook. It is almost like a walking tour of Medieval England. I... moret was easy for me to imagine that I was strolling through London, with a tour guide, who was explaining what I was seeing in an entertaining and interesting way.
review 2: I found this book to be quite fascinating. I had to read it in little chunks because there was so much information to try to assimilate, that reading any more than a section of a chapter at one time would have been useless. But the author does a good job at his descriptions of life in 14th century England. I think that he covered most every aspect of life in that time; I cannot think of anything that might have been missed. I high;y recommend this book to anyone interested in routine daily life of medieval times; or anyone interested in that time period. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. less
