review 1: Man, history will never be boring and Mortimer brought its charisma to a whole new level by going through the specific elements Elizabethan England comprises of. From the kinds of food peasants and noblemen eat, to their complicated clothes, up to their lifestyles and pastimes. Everything is perfectly explained. My only woe is that Mortimer should write more Time Traveller books like this.
review 2: Described as a guidebook to the past, this book evokes an atmosphere of Elizabethan England. However, it very much is a snapshot of what you would find at a very specific moment in time. There is no analysis, no cause and effect. It just is. And this is fine, but I do feel that it leaves the reader with more questions than it answers. There is also an emphasis on th
... moree lives and experiences of the more well to do sections of society, no doubt because this is what the surviving evidence is concerned with, but you are still left with the feeling that for all the information you have, if you did end up in Elizabethan England you would still struggle to understand the experience. less
