review 1: This is not one of the books you can´t finish in one night. Or maybe you can but I would not recommend it to you. There are just too much different topics, too much things to think about…I know it sounds weird but I loved the book and didn´t like the story at the same time. I have a deep respect for Chimamanda. Her style was clear, colourful and very poetic. What more, she implemented two difficult topics in the same time. She was my first author after A.S. Byatt who wrote about art and one of the first who used in their work psychological approaches. One could write Ph.D. thesis on her characters and the structure of her book. For me it was one unique piece of scientific work. Thank you for that, Chimamanda! It doesn´t matter that I didn´t like your characters. Such... more things depend on one´s taste. But I am sure we will see each other again.
review 2: Fantastic!! Chimamanda Adichie is so incredibly, extraordinarily talented. Since a few years ago when I read her novel "Half of a yellow sun" I was totally overwhelmed by her talent in story telling and the beauty and accuracy of the images she drew with her words. She is a real master. She creates a complete world, full of colors and perfumes and music and emotions with her words. In this collection of short stories, And as she mentioned her famous TED talk, she tells "her" stories. The story of her Igbo Nigerians. She knows the world she is talking about just so well, her characters are just so real and simple and complex and just so perfectly human. She writes about Igbo Nigerians because she is Igbo Nigerian, and she knows these people and their culture, their tradition and their modern life struggles. The way she writes, you can just tell how much she loves them. She tells their story, their love life, their immigration, their loneliness, their ambitions, their struggle to find their sexual identity, them being stuck between traditions and modern life. Just to remind you at the end, we are all so amusingly similar! I do not know many people who are as calmly in peace and aware of their identity and at the same time without slightest nationalistic prejudices. When I first got to know her thrugh her work, after I learned that she is almost my age (she is only 5 years older than me!!) to be honest I was feeling extremely envious! But now I can only say " I am a big fan, lady!!" less
