review 1: I was impressed that this book included a leading woman who wasn't a virgin and a leading man who wasn't either a billionaire, sheikh or prince. Not only that, but I was impressed that the author chose to recognize the LGTB community in this book. Sophie, the leading lady, came to the Fitzroy castle with her close friend Jasper to ACT in the role as his girlfriend so that he could keep his sexual orientation secret from his family during the course of his father's birthday celebration. Problems begin to arise when Jasper's brother, Kit, who doesn't know that Jasper is gay, but Kit and Sophie are attracted to each other. The author also takes another daring move to these genre of novels by including the death and a funeral in the storyline. I like the chances she has t... moreaken by breaking away from typical Harlequin Presents plot lines. However, one aspect kept me from giving the book a full five stars, and that was it didn't pull on my emotional heartstrings enough. My favorite Harlequin presents stories are ones where there's an interaction between the designated lovers that leaves a tugging feeling in my gut and on the verge of tears. This story almost had that in a couple of places, but not quite. I think part of the weakness with this story for me was that the two characters barely knew for themselves how they felt about themselves or the other person. In the stories that seem to work for me (like any of Penny Jordan's novels, for instance), there is a lot of self-talk/exposure of the character's inner thoughts that lead to misunderstandings but also exhibits some kind of self-realization, and this novel was lacking in that aspect.
review 2: This starts of Sophie and Kit's story and it was very enjoyable though it had many HP tropes, Sophie meeting Kit in an embarrassing way on the train when she is dressed badly, tired then it turns out that he is the brother of her friend Jasper, who is gay and she is pretending to be his girlfriend.Kit has a very bad impression of her and there is smoking hot chemistry between them, then there is his dysfunctional daddy. The book ends with them kind of together, with Kit all set to go back to his job as a bomb defuser.Despite all the tropes I loved the way it was written, Sophie was young and vibrant and modern. less
