review 1: My favorite books growing up were oftentimes simple picture books. Before I could ever read and even into adulthood the most creative and imaginative moments always came after reading wordless books. The Umbrella, by Ingrid Schubert, is an incredible picture book that starts off with a dog and cat sitting outside on a sidewalk. It is a very windy day and the trees and leaves are blowing everywhere. The dog sees a red umbrella and decides to pick it up. Because it is so windy he is flown into the air and starts to drift away from the cat. As the dog rises he gets higher and higher until he finally reaches the clouds. His journey begins as he travels to several different places seeing Africa and even the ocean. As the dog sees the world he finally travels home safely. I thr... moreoughly enjoyed reading The Umbrella and witnessing all of the artistic elements that were included. From the beginning each page was filled with vivid colors. Some pages used cool and soft tones to depict the setting while others were loud and bright. One essential aspect of any picture book is the fact that because there are not any words the pictures must be able to tell the story. My favorite part about The Umbrella was even though it was wordless and the illustrations did a fantastic job telling the events, there was still room for the reader’s interpretation. The pictures took me to one spot and left room for growth. This element alone definitely kept my interest in the book the entire read. Overall I loved The Umbrella and the creativity used. I enjoyed the friendly and artistic pictures and definitely feel as though all children would enjoy this read!
review 2: Text-to-text: This book relates to Mirror, because they both seem to broaden a student's horizon and intrigue them about the world in general with the beautiful illustrations.Text-to-self: The Umbrella is so captivating with its illustrations that it encourages readers to use their imagination and possibly fulfill their dreams about places they want to visit.Text-to-world: This book would be good for asking young children questions about where they think the dog is in a particular picture, and you can also highlight different landforms that can be seen. less
