review 1: I don't know why I've been so intimidated to read something by Isabel Allende - she's been on my "I should read something by her" list forever. Well this was one I found on a Barnes and Noble trade paperback table and I ended up really liking it. It had great plotting, nuanced characters, and (thwarting my worst fears) absolute readability. The story is about Maya, a young woman who is raised in her grandparents' home. She ends up as a troubled teenager, in with the wrong crowd, then suddenly in the middle of a dangerous world of drugs and prostitution. To help her escape, her grandmother sends her to a remote island off the coast of Chile, where Maya begins to rebuild her life. This was a book I was reluctant to put down because it was so compelling, starring a damage... mored but compelling main character. Also - I'm no longer afraid of Allende. :)
review 2: This book was amazing. There are no words that i could use to thoroughly praise this book. It has it's chaotic moments, melodramatic ones and even a hint of romance. This book is geared to towards everyone who's interests range from family relationships to crime investigation. Although this book is currently not filled with humor it does have its funny moments where you might crack a smile. Be aware for plot twists. What the characters say tend to have double meanings. Of course there was one thing in particular that i didn't like about this book. The author kept using flashbacks, so the chronological order was kind of messed up. You had to stop reading the magic of the book to go back and figure out what time period you were reading. I'm amazed at Allende's writing technique and admire her even more. Other than that this book was AMAZING! Have reading! ^_^ less

Loved it! Having heard her speak at Babel about her family I saw so much if her in the character of Nini the grandmother, and the descriptions of Berkeley held true to my memories there as well. Harrowing description of a teenagers descent I to addiction was very balanced with the flashback style of knowing she comes through ok. What a good story teller - each piece she writes belongs in the story, all coming together. And such great and heart and love seeps out from each of the characters. Even the villains show a little soul.
