review 1: No leas a Isabel Allende tan pronto hayas concluido alguna lectura densa o profunda, que al inicio sentirás a Chabelita demasiado trivial y banal.Eso me pasó a mí. Sin embargo, después de unos capítulos empecé a apreciar su estilo simple, plano y fresco desde el punto de vista literario. Extrañaba las frase profundas y elocuentes de otros autores pero apreciaba la información cultural de Chile y la cotidianeidad de EE.UU. Y sobre todo, gozaba esa espontaneidad que me hacía reir a carcajadas aunque los otros pasajeros en un bus o un avión, u otras personas de un restaurante o bar voltearan a verme con una indiscreta mirada extraña.
review 2: I would not recommend this as your first book of Allende's because her other books are brilliant and this one d... moreoesn't quite live up to her previous work. I think part of it is her focus on an overindulged, privileged girl as the center of this story. Unfortunately Allende doesn't cover Las Vegas at all, yes my city is flawed so I never expect any stories to focus on anything but the "seedy" side of the city, but she doesn't capture this city at all. Also, it may be more of a translation issue but the vocabulary was more of that of an English teacher than a young runaway. less
