review 1: I was completely taken in with this book, in love, even... for most of it. All is a lot to ask for, I know, especially since I'm me, but just once I want to be as in love at the end of a story as at the beginning and middle. Sadly, though,I might just have to write that story myself. But as for this one, the author's telling of it was extraordinary to me. I almost instantly loved her. Her words... the way I could almost see her mind working to connect them... this author gets five stars from me. Because it wasn't her that I didn't still love at the end, it was her story that unwound differently that I wanted it to. Being HERS, of course, that's just the way it is and I shouldn't fault her for it... BUT... I can't help but feel just a little misled. Or teased, is perhaps a be... moretter word. And, though I'm never going to get it, I STILL want that thing she teased with. Far more than what I got, which was by no means a bad ending, just a different. And a lacking something. A someone, to be exact, who I was more intrigued by than any other someone throughout this course of pain, mourning, and misery. There was a hope in you, S. And a story I'll now grieve for not having been given the opportunity to read. And for what else I grieved for before I got to that... I hope there are yellow kites in heaven.
review 2: This is a magnificent novel, but not for the faint hearted. It takes you on a trip to hell and back without a self-indulgent word wasted. Although it is very much character driven, with a page-turning plot, the settings are sharply evocative and suggest that the author knows them well. In particular Morley shows a deep understanding of and sensitivity to traditional church life and to the world of pre- and post- apartheid South Africa. She consistently avoids cliche and ideology for subtle insight into the human condition and the theological issues that surround it. Highly recommended. less
