review 1: I really didn't expect to like this book. I randomly picked it up at the library, and the description reminded me so much of "Room" that I figured it was a knock-off and would be awful. The beginning of the book does leave a little to be desired, though I can't really think of why. But about 25% of the way through, I couldn't put this down. I would have liked to see more of the Charlie plot-line, rather than the day-to-day "how do I escape?" But halfway through, the book goes from good to great. This is not a literary masterpiece, although it is better written than most books of its ilk, but it's one that kept me interested and wanting more. So no, it wasn't quite the great character piece that "Room" was, but it proved to be a great book all of its... more own.
review 2: Like many other reviewers, I wanted to love this book based on premise. And as a premise, it's awesome. But like everyone else has pointed out, there's something missing in the execution. Though I think the author did a fine job of aging the protagonist and keeping us turning pages, there's just something lacking in the narrative. I didn't particularly like or dislike the characters - even Dobbs - but maybe that was part of the point? All in all, it was good, but lacked that spark needed to make it great. less

Twists and turns and twists and turns. The last third of the book drags a little, but it's worth it.
