The Obernewtyn Chronicles
review 1: This full series has always been very much one of my favourites. When I started reading Obernewtyn over 10 years ago I found a fantastic and captivating world designed by Carmody that has kept me riveted for the long years the writing of this story has spanned. A story with depth that does make you think so much as you read. Although I know it sounds a bit pretentious, For me this story always raises questions about the rate at which we hurtle towards a future that may or may not end up in similar state and more importantly shines a very fictional but accurate light on how we interact as humans. The Sending in its self carried this tradition beautifully and as always left me wanting more.
review 2: I loved the first few books of the Obernewtyn series, but they
... morehave deteriorated since, and this book was the worst one yet. It was so slow and boring, I nearly put it down never to pick it up again so many times. The only thing that kept me reading was the fact that I had already read 5 books in the series, and with only 2 books left, the end was in sight. At the beginning of the book, there were two key things left for Elspeth to do - find the last key and destroy the war machine. Sadly, Elspeth achieves neither of those in this book. The first half of the book is just fluff and the other half of the book is Elspeth wandering through the mountains without even reaching the city where the last key is meant to be located. And as for Elspeth, I don't really like her character anymore. I find her very arrogant and keep wishing someone would take her down a notch or two.I know I will read the last book, because I have come this far, but I am no longer looking forward to it. It is very sad because the series started so well. less
