review 1: A compilation of two entertaining but mediocre novellas from "extreme" writer Jack Ketchum. The first novella, OLD FLAMES, feels like yet another FATAL ATTRACTION rip-off, only rather less predictable than one might expect. Ketchum tries to infuse the story with some depth but ultimately fails to overcome the inherent schlockiness of the story's premise. As for the second novella, RIGHT 2 LIFE, just how many times does Ketchum plan on writing about a girl being kidnapped by some twisted family and subjected to horrific S&M degradation? By my count, this is the third time he's used this very same story line (in addition to THE WOMAN and THE GIRL NEXT DOOR), and I've still but read only a modest sampling of Ketchum's work! What the heck is going on inside that guy's bra... morein? RIGHT 2 LIFE is by far the most superficial of Ketchum's treatments of this scenario (though, there is some subtext on abortion that Ketchum steers away from at the earliest opportunity), rendering this novella completely unnecessary in my opinion. As with OLD FLAMES, RIGHT 2 LIFE is a story that cries out for a much more literary treatment than what Ketchum provides. Sure, it's good, entertaining schlock (for those of you who go in for that sort of thing), but schlock nonetheless.
review 2: Usually I can't put down Jack Ketchums books this one was no different. Although as I was reading this I was really into it and then wait...what it was over. I was about half way through and it was over and going into another story. I didn't know but it also had the book right to life in it. I didn't really enjoy the fact that the book didn't say it included both but overall Old flames was a good read. less

This book has two novellas in it. The second is "Right to Life". A must read for splatterpunk fans.

The second story in this book is easily one of the most disturbing things I have ever read.

One of the most unusual story lines I have ever read--loved it!
