review 1: A distinctly pedestrian tale set in Viking times. The author is fairly talented as she creates moderately realistic characters. However she lets herself down by her obsession with explaining every last little word and term by using foot notes instead of a simple glossary at the back of the book, leaving you with the feeling this is much more a narrative history book than a story at heart. On top of this the action moves incredibly slowly and when I flicked ahead to find out if anything was ever likely to happen, I became aware that this is in fact a new version of a very well-known part of Viking history, namely the Viking expeditions to 'Vinland' of Leif Eriksson; a part of history told so many times it's almost immediately familiar to anyone with even a glancing interest ... morein Vikings.I have to admit I was disappointed that the author had chosen to go down this well-worn route instead of taking the Vikings east towards a much less told part of their history, specifically the Viking voyages down the Rus, the founding of cities like Kiev, Novgorad etc.Overall, a distinctly average book struggling to tread water in distinctly mundane territory. The one positive I can give this book is that it's at least still not as tedium inducing as Tim Severin's version of the same tale. Other than that, it's utterly unremarkable and only worth bothering with if you get it for nothing and have nothing better to do. Literally NOTHING better, or even else, to do.
review 2: I read this book a long time ago but whenever I have time I pick it up and read it again. This is my favorite book and I've read it so many times I can remember what happens in each chapter. It is about Hejka a girl who's father and brothers died so she lives with her mother. One day Viking invaders come to the small island village and take Hejka back as a slave. She travels to Vinland where she works as a messenger and watches the cows. Hejka soon finds herself more willing to help her "Mistress", because after some years she has been promised freedom and land of her own. I really love this story because it is very touching, sad, happy, adventurous and exciting. I think this is a great read for kids, teens and adults. less
