review 1: Summary: A Sheppard boy is sent on a mission to take his sheep to the King to be sheared. Or so he’s told. Or is something more sinister at work? When I first saw the cover for the book it looked like a normal stereotypical fantasy. On the inside an author compared J.R. Parker to Christopher Paolini. I could literally find hundreds of fantasies where there is a little blurb that says “Better than…. [Insert popular author here.]” And the book ends up being subpar. I had high expectations. And it delivered. The story takes place in a medieval setting, in a land called Gable. Being a Christian fantasy, there is no magic. And I’m ok with it. I’m tired of Harry Potter esque fantasy. It is a refreshing break. But, the plausibility of this fictional land was strained.... more On one page , someone talks about “Asian silk”. How can there be Asian silk in a land that is not on Earth? Then said character calls another character a “tight fella”? So that character is a mobster? Besides these low points, the world building is awesome. Another thing I loved was the prose. It was snappy and to the point. Think Hemingway. And yes I compared it to Hemingway, totally guilty. Last but not least, let’s talk about the characters. The characters lived and breathed as if they were real people. The villains were just as complex as our heroes. Even one repented for his transgressions. It was weird at first. I’ve never seen a villain change in a Fantasy. It reinforced what the Bible says. Anyone can change. Overall I give this book 4 out of 5 stars! If you don’t have this book, buy it. It won’t let you down.
review 2: This story kept jumping back and forth between characters, and I kept trying to figure out how they were all going to come together in the end. The plot was entertaining, and I really liked the main characters. The conclusion was good and explained most everything satisfactorily. My only complaint is that I would have liked to find out a little bit more of Robbyn's and Drift's stories. I was also sort of surprised when Christian viewpoints were brought up (although they never specifically say "Christian" or "Jesus," it was kind of easy to see what was meant) because it I just wasn't expecting it in a story full of fantasy creatures and monsters. less
