review 1: I would never judge a writer by one book if he has many, especially if he's the highest grossing American author in Asia! Hats off to Mr. Needham! After saying that, I must admit that The Ambassador's Wife could have been aptly titled Tay, which is the surname of the lead character. I'm unfamiliar with Singaporean culture, so my knowledge of how Singaporeans conduct a murder investigation is nil. As an Inspector, I expected more investigating out of Tay. There was hardly any investigation done, and it didn't seem like the plot was anxious to get to it. I found that most of the book was focused on Tay's thoughts. Or should I say indecisions? Right when I began liking a character, they were no longer mentioned. Overall, the book was good. The ending was better than I thought... more it would be. It's obvious that Needham is a great writer. I'm assuming that this novel isn't one of his strongest in regards to plot with action. I did like some of the prose, and I would have loved knowing more about JA. When I purchased this book, I also purchased The King of Macau. I do believe that this book will be a little more up my ally, and can't wait to get to it. This review is merely suggestive, as my preference for crime novels is action, grit and a much faster pace. For others this book may be the right book to give five stars. In this regard, I do recommend it.
review 2: I couldn't help but feel when I read this that I've read this plot before - it was all vaguely familiar. It wasn't until the end that I realized it was very similar, I thought, to another book the author has written that I had previously read. That is disappointing because I really liked it the first time - but reading similar plot lines and coming across similiar characters as a previously written novel is disappointing. Not sure I want to try another one! less

Not well written, but good fun and I like how it was reminiscent of the noir novels of the 50s.

Combination police procedural (set in Singapore) and spy thriller. Very well done.

Good mystery. Enjoyed the different cultural elements and Samuel Tay's character.
