review 1: Fabulous new world to dive into: a little steampunk, a little science fiction, a little action, and a little romance. Piper, a scrapper getting by through scavenging for machine parts that crash into her world on meteors, discovers a young girl in the debris and takes her back to her home, where she lives alone after the death of her father. When a man, Doloman, comes knocking on her door a little later to retrieve the girl, Piper senses instantly that things are not what they seem. What follows is a fantastical game of cat and mouse, with Piper and the girl finding escape on a steam-powered train only to find that things everywhere she looks are not what they seem. Clearly the first installment of a terrific story, readers will find much to enjoy about this book. Gri... morepping, unique, and original. Well done!
review 2: Firefly for kids. Piper is a scavenger in a parallel world where meteors fling in objects from our world. On a scavenge, she comes across a young girl with amnesia who is being changed by a creepy man, so they flee together. Very solid magical adventure. Piper, a mechanic, is a cross between Kaylee and Zoe, while Anna is all River. Gee is a hybrid Mal/Wash. Steampunky elements shine. It ties together nicely, the plot is resolved though it leaves larger questions; I assume it'll be a series but it stands alone. I've heard this for Newbery, and I'm not convinced it's distinguished. I'd entertain arguments, though. Definitely noting this for the winter gift bib and next summer's recs. less
