review 1: ANother 4.5 out of 5.This second novel builds on the first very well indeed. The two nations move closer to war, supposedly on the actions and slights of both the gods and some of the less-scrupulous and/or intelligent members of the Fellein Empire.Great pacing and characters, and less confusing than a lot of the fantasy stuff I've read... more direct and honed.Cannot wait for the third, but it seems I have to wait until Angry Robot puts it out.
review 2: I decently enjoyed the first book in this series (Seven Forges), saw my library had part two, and grabbed it. The problems I had with the first book are there times seven in this installment. Here's my issue: the pace here is glacial. Essentially in two 400-page books we have about 150 total pages of anything h
... moreappening. What I found myself doing here was skimming everything except Andover's sections, and, honestly, I could have skimmed those for the first half of the book. What's frustrating is that Moore has an interesting world & some intriguing/creepy/etc. details inside that world. Finding out why the Forges people wear veils was an utterly unsettling moment. The betrayal at the end of Seven Forges was a minor heartbreak. Moore is obviously a good writer, and I seriously think this whole experiment or whatever could be GREAT, if he just knew pacing. There's so much that "happens" in this book that could have been one or two lines of summation. The first two books in a series should NOT feel like they have as much filler as book 8 in Wheel of Time. I'm amused by the changing tags on the covers of the books. "War Is Coming." By the end of Book 1, you felt like, OK, now it's war. This was kind of a slow buildup, but ... we're in it now! Book 2 is ... more buildup. We're not OFFICIALLY at war at the end of it, but ... we're ... really just as close as it seemed after Book 1. Its tagline is "War Has Come." Will Book 3 be "War Has Now Probably Arrived" and Book 4 be "War Is Seriously Imminent, Guys, Just You Wait"?Frustrating as all hell, because there're the glimmers of a good story beneath all the filler. less

Good story, yet this 2nd book didn't advance the story enough, felt it should have been longer.
