review 1: I am a huge fan of this series, but I felt that this book was missing something. It was almost as if there were too many plots, too many characters, and too many twists all trying to get wrapped up in one novel. For example, the young-Nemo thing. Its not every day you get to train the man who trained you. But other than a couple of remarks between Jack and that centaur, this plot wasn't very developed. Or the Tamerlane House, which seems riddled with plot holes. Why did Bert wait until this crisis to reveal this place? What do the Caretakers do while in the paintings? How can a dead man refuse to be painted and just leave an empty landscape behind? Why would you ever paint someone like Doyle or Houdini if you never really wanted to let them out? Why does Bert seem to be imm... moreortal without a painting? Why does Poe not need a painting? Why does the painter not need a painting? But despite the extra potential I feel this book could have had, don't think it wasn't still fantastic. The Tamerlane House, despite my questions, is basically my dream destination now. This book still had the mix of history, fantasy, humor, and adventure that I have come to love, and I will certainly be reading the next one.
review 2: The Shadow Dragons is my last in the series to reread. The next two books will be new to me! I am still enjoying this series, enjoying the characters and all the twists and turns. Each book leads the Caretaker into a bigger mess, making earlier conflicts seem almost too easy to set right. In this one, "to save the world" the Caretakers must team up with previous Caretakers and loyal subjects/citizens of the Archipelago. There are many separate journeys in this one--the Caretakers split up--and some will venture to the end of the world and back. One of their allies is Don Quixote! Madoc plays a significant role in this one--as does Rose. This book seems to be taking the series in a new direction. less

Getting a little harder to follow than the first 3 but still interesting in the fantasy realm.
