review 1: The second book in the Year of the Dragon series picks up where the first one left off. Our heroes must leave on a journey to find Bran's dragon, and Sato's father. There's also a lot of political intrigue going on...a lot more than I had expected from a fantasy series.Because this book doesn't have to set up the entire world like the first one did, there's a lot more Japanese culture that comes through. That was a lot of fun to read.I should maybe have reread the first book before I started this one - I grabbed the entire set as a deal on Amazon, and decided to finally sit down and finish the series. I got a bit lost in the sea of names. The main characters are easy. But I had to think back and remind myself who Dylan was before I figured out what exactly was going on whe... moren the POV changed. On to book three!
review 2: Bran, Sato and Nagomi are back in this unusual story that blends historical fiction, set in imperial Japan, with fantasy, dragons and a touch of magic. The Warrior’s Soul picks up where The Shadow of Black Wings leaves off. Bran is in mortal danger and disguised as a Samurai, he flees with Sato and Nagomi in search of his lost dragon. Evil however is close behind and at ever turn. James Calbraith does a wonderful job at weaving fact and fantasy into an alternative but very realistic history that pulls the reader into a rich tapestry of landscape, intrigue and history. While the story focuses on Bran and his friends, there are a few sub-plots with numerous characters, and that can get a bit confusing (especially since the names are almost all Japanese sounding). That said, I would still recommend this series. less
