review 1: “In with the Devil” by James Keene withy Hillel Levin, published by St. Martin’s Griffin.Category – True CrimeJames Keene looked like he had everything going for him. He was a star athlete in high school, had many friends, and a seemingly wonderful home life. The downward spiral started with his parent’s divorce and his desire for money. He found a very lucrative business in high school selling drugs. Most people thought he would go to a big time college on a football scholarship. Keene decided on a small college close to home where he was able to keep his drug business going and expanding. He dropped out of college after two years and wanted for nothing, cars, houses, and women. He put his father into several business ventures that all failed and was a seri... moreous drag on his finances. It was a drug deal gone bad that put him into prison for ten years. Keene was given a unique opportunity to have his time commuted if he were willing to work with the FBI to get a serial killer to confess to his crimes. Larry Hall was already in prison but there was a possibility that his sentence might be reversed. Although he was only charged with one murder, he was strongly implicated in another with the possibility that he may have murdered at least nineteen other young girls.Keene tells of his time in prison and how he befriended Larry Hall and was able to get him to confess to the murder of one young girl. The story goes on to tell the aftermath of both Larry Hall’s and James Keene’s life.
review 2: Very hard for me to read this one. I grew up with Jessica Roach, the girl Larry Hall was eventually convicted of murdering. She was four years younger than I was; I was 18 when she went missing. We grew up in the same very small town (Georgetown, IL, population 3,600), belonged - at the time - to the same very tight-knit religious sect (Jehovah's Witnesses), and I never in a million years believed something like that could happen in my town, to someone I knew. The story saddened me, but knowing that Mr. Hall is in prison for the rest of his life brings some measure of relief.I admit that I picked up the book for Jessica's story, but I was sucked in by the ups and downs of the author's personal history. He was a young man who paid dearly for his mistakes, but in the end, doing what he did to help bring justice for Jessica and Larry Hall's other victims is truly marvelous. Kudos to James Keene for his bravery. Jessica would thank you if she could. less
