review 1: An interesting new approach to civil war history focusing exclusively on the documented role of Lincoln as actual commander in chief, directing strategic planning and decision making. Since I have read so many histories of the war, a fair amount of this material was not new. However, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it again in this focused context. Note to potential readers, this book is not about the battles if that is what you may be looking for.
review 2: This is the only book I know of that focuses directly on Lincoln learning to be a military commander. The stories of dealing with patronage generals and Lincoln's genius for self-education fascinates anyone interested in Civil War history. I have no education in military strategy beyond once reading Clausew... moreitz. However, managing generals in any war must involve political considerations. Lincoln's may have been of his time, but I suspect any president could learn from what he faced and how he managed both strategy and politics. less
