review 1: I'm disapointed. It starts off really interesting and even funny. The anegdotes of human ways to discover dangerous things is both eye-opening and amusing. But sonewhere in the 30% of the book (1950s) the author starts doing what he himself hoped to prevent - he starts going into unnecessary details and after a while you're getting fed up with hearing almost the same stories that only differ in type of the radioactive source about which ge goes on and on. Missed chance to bring this important topic in a way a lot of people could get on board with.
review 2: part "catalog" and part analysis. The final conclusions are interesting reading and the whole book is fascinating. At a few points this felt too "catalog" (maybe primarily the US military section, as I've
... morerecently read Command & Control, I felt like that should have been referenced/acknowledged as "if you want more, go read Command & Control). The international aspect and more broadly cast historical perspective (as well as the more modern analysis of civilian issues) made this book a great compliment to explore nuclear issues. less
