review 1: Started at 11pm last night, finished at 1.30am. I really liked this book. I agree with a lot of the previous reviewers in that I picked up the book thinking it was going to be lighthearted and cutesy, but what it was was so much more. The authors touch on things that a lot of kids today have to deal with: bullying, suicide, rape, abandonment, death and more. The way the main character handles it made it worth the read. I think that anyone who reads this will find a good example in Cuckoo. And hopefully, if a teen who is reading this book is struggling, it could also save a life. Kids need to know that there is hope. And where better to put that than a pop fic teen book?
review 2: At the beginning, it was hard for me to get into this story. Margaret "Cuckoo" Cl
... morearke is a student at North Plains High School. It is in a small town outside of Portland, Oregon. It has its fair share of jocks, barbies, geeks, goths, etc. Margaret is in a group called the Freakshow. Everyone in her group has a nickname. Hers came from the fact that she was actually placed in a mental hospital for 10 days. They think it stems from the fact that her mother left her. Then as the story progressed, I was surprised at some of the topics the storied covered. Bullying, attempted rape, mental health, death, suicide, parents leaving their children are just some of the topics that are discussed in this book. I would even be afraid to go to this school. I'm not sure who this book is targeted towards, but I guess it is meant for high school students. There is also other common topics such as potential boyfriends, girlfriends, creating stories, imaginary characters, and teachers. These I think are helpful to students. The Freakshow group actually had students that were good natured. They just wanted to make people happy. It would make them feel better to help others. They felt it was a cool idea that maybe school wasn't bad. People could share and people could listen to see how much they had in common. If this is how high school is now, I can see why many people are turning to home schooling. It took me a while, but I actually enjoyed the book. less
