review 1: This book started off great. The author had a moving description of the death of the protagonist's mother that's not often encountered in juvenile literature. However, as the story moved along, I found the dialogue somewhat stilted. I think this is a fairly common mistake writers of children's literature make; maybe it's because they're writing and not hanging out with actual live children all day. I actually found the almost robotic use of dialogue to distract from an otherwise interesting story. This is a Bluebonnet Book Award nominee.
review 2: Dead City is an exciting, and unique book that has also won the Texas Bluebonnet award. This story explains the life of Molly Bigelow who is a regular girl who goes to MIST: the Metropolitan Institute of Science and
... more Technology, but that's not the only thing on her plate. She also fights zombies in order to keep her city safe. Her mom was the ultimate zombie fighter and she has to live up to her name. The question is... Will she? This book would be fun to give to kids because even though it's something fictional, it's a fun read and this is the kind of story that would capture kids' attention and make them want to keep reading. This can also be one of the first books that may challenge them. less
