review 1: (read by Cameron Stewart). Superb narration of this fascinating book, a fictional interpretation of the plane crash over Lockerbie, Scotland, and one husband’s relentless 20-year effort to find those responsible for the deaths of his wife and daughter. It’s a beautifully written mystery tale, a story of self-discovery, and a search in a cavern of secrets with a penlight. What is most important is what Alan Teiling finally finds out about himself, some 20 years on, and what it is to let your life be absorbed in pursuit of the unknowable, however high-minded the quest. Semi-based on real characters, and the perils of reinterpreting a controversial reality are apparent.
review 2: Well written, clever and engaging novel about one man’s life time journey in se
... morearch of the truth which leads to the cause of his family’s death in the plane crash (clear allusions to Lockerbie). The whole story is brilliantly unfolded in the short period of time of one week or so. I must admit that generally I am distracted by retrospective bits, constantly emerging in some of modern writing. Too often this technique ruins continuity of plot and smashes reader into the walls of new themes and ideas. However, it was mainly flashbacks that made Robertson’s novel to stay highly sensual and real. As for me, the key downside of the story was the last part when the main character meets Kim Parr who emerges as a person of the bigger loss, capable to withstand all adversaries through her blurry philosophical acceptance. I would stick to the main character’s revolt rather than to the Kim’s passivity....and yes, it would be wrong and foolish. Recommend. less

Excellent. Except I wanted to be more convinced that the protagonist was thawed out by the fire.

Not a bad book all in all. Not a massively fast pace, more a slow burn. Enjoyed it though.
