review 1: Just finished. This was good! It is bleak and black in equal measure. The psychology of relationship, loss, love, hurt, hope, despair are explored as Beth deals with her soldier husband, his loving and brutal sides, his PTSD from war in Iran, which leaves him hollowed out mentally and physically. The hope of treatment and the despair of its failure and the restless hope of doing something about it whatever it takes. And then the malevolent Machine. Not so much a character as a menacing presence - also a shell, at the very edge of sentient life. Darkness and a twist at the end.
review 2: The first one by Mr Smythe that I've read and I loved the concept and writing. Its near-future, post apocalyptic (after the floods), and focused on a small and intensely creepy
... morehuman story. A techno ghost story. I appreciated the way we were dropped into the world rather than introduced to it, as well as its big themes on a small scale. Saw the plot twist coming a mile off, but I think that was by design. less
