review 1: When I first started reading this book I wasn’t sure what to expect. It’s a steampunk type of book and I’ve been disappointed greatly by some in this genre in the past. This one however did not disappoint me.It’s about a fourteen year old girl, named Sophronia, in what seems to be the Victorian era in England who is not your typical female of that time. She gets into trouble, she has a curious mind about the machinery and the inner workings of things. She likes climbing and basically everything that is considered for a boy. In short, she is not very ladylike according to her mother and older sister Petunia. Her mother is at her wits end with her and doesn’t really know what to do with her anymore to have her be a lady. So, in a last ditch effort, she enrolls Soph... moreronia in a finishing school called, Miss Geraldine’s Finishing School for Young Ladies of Quality. However, this school is not your typical finishing school. This is where the title comes into play. They learn your obvious things like dance, poise, dress and etiquette, but they also learn the ways of espionage, death and diversion on many levels. The main focus plot wise in this besides watching Sophronia go from bumbling tomboy to a lady is the Prototype. The school on the day that she gets there is attacked by flywaymen. In this attack of sorts they send over a mechanimal with a warning that they have three weeks to produce the prototype or they will respond with fire. The mechanimal ends up being left with the school and Sophronia keeps it as a pet she then names, Bumbersnoot.Throughout the whole book there were characters that you like and ones that you don’t. Sophronia, Dimity, Monique, Soap, Vieve and a few others are very present in the book. The story is being told from Sophornia’s point of view and her biggest opposing character in this is Monique. She pretty much hates Sophronia from the start because she is the reason that Monique was demoted to debut from senior. Dimity and Sophronia end up meeting the day they were both recruited along with Pillover, Dimity’s little brother who is going to Bunsons and become fast friends. My two favourite characters other than Sophronia are Soap and Vieve. One of my favourite things about this book considering the time this book takes place is that when Sophronia meets Soap she doesn’t have this huge reaction to the fact that he’s black. All she does is say something along the lines of “Oh you’re always soot coloured” and then goes about her business again. Vieve is another character that I really like. Vieve at first is thought to be a boy because of her dressing in boys clothes and being covered in soot and grime. She’s as unpolished as Sophronia was when she was first recruited and has no intention of changing. She enjoys finding out the inner workings of the airship that is the school and making her own inventions which are in fact very useful at points in the book. Overall, the charactersin the book are very well written and make you want to help them when they get themselves into a bind. The writing style in this book is done in such a way that it is fast paced and easy to read. It is always flowing and the author manages to go from one section to another very easily. I liked the book very much overall. It was fun to read and had some really funny parts in it. Mostly dealing with Soap and Vieve when they’re with Sophronia. My only complaint about this is that it wasn’t longer and had more dealings with Soap and Vieve in it. As this is the first of a series I can only hope that in future books they have bigger parts in the next and any other books in the future.
review 2: It takes a special kind of book to make it to my Comfort-Heartbreak shelf. The type of story that makes me cry, get mad and fall in love. The type of story that I hold in a special place - that when I am in particular mood - I go back to it and read it again. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~I love a good story - where the Heroine is strong in the face of an Alpha! - This series has all the makings to be just as great as Patricia Briggs Mercy books!! - Can't wait to read more. less
