No One Ever Asked, by Katie Ganshert, is a very powerful story that focuses on the prejudices some people still have regarding colored Americans as well as the topics of divorce and adoption. This is a modern day story, that is based on real-world events and takes place in Missouri. South Fork school district has lost is accreditation and many parents want their children to be bused to Crystal Ridge, so they can get a good education. There are tensions as many from Crystal Ridge do not want their school system, which is one of the best, to suffer because of the students transferring in from South Fork.
Not everyone feels this way. The Covington’s have adopted a little girl from a poorly run orphanage from Africa. The children were fed once a day, had no toys and were locked in the dark. Jen is considering having Jubilee attend South Fork to be with others like her.
One of the first people Jen meets is Camille, who is the PTA chairwoman and mother of three. Her oldest daughter becomes friend with one of the boys from South Fork. When he attempts to visit her, he is approached by police and forced to stand with his hands above his head.
This is a great story! There are so many things in the story that just stand out out to me. The mother of a former South Fork student has worked so hard, working multiple jobs, to put her daughter through school. Now this girl is a teacher at Crystal Ridge. Camille is one of the most looked up to women, but when her marriage is falling apart she does not feel she can share this with her friends. It is interesting to see the difference in the type of education the two schools were able to give. Had South Fork had the finances Crystal Ridge did, would it had suffered like it did?
