review 1: Was it the author's intention to create such a self absorbed, weak, deceitful and pitying lead character? If so then she achieved this very well. In stead of finding myself empathising with Lucy, I found her intensely annoying. In stead of funny, I found her cringe-worthy and dim-witted. In stead of wanting to back her to win the man of her dreams, I found her to be such an obstinate, blind, shallow, self pitying, poor character that I couldn't help think that Henry would indeed be better off elsewhere! The other characters (Erin, Dominique and Henry) are much more interesting. I continued reading the book (the plot of which could have been summed up in to a single paragraph without the pain of a few hundred pages to endure) to ensure sad Lucy really did end up finding Mr ... moreRight. The author writes well with an easy style and a good turn of phrase, which is how I am able to rate this book 2 stars rather than 1. Not sure I'm tempted to read any more by Jane Costello if this is any indication of the plot that other books may take.
review 2: I've read this book two times, the first time was on a study abroad trip in england, while I was in Liverpool for the weekend, oddly enough, and the second time was just recently.Such a fun book and fun characters to follow. Jane Costello puts you in the shoes of a young woman who's just trying to find her soulmate, but going about it wrong. Who hasn't exaggerated what hobbies they have or things they are interested in? Well in this case, Lucy just takes it a little too far... After her failed attempts at dating, she decides to focus on getting her flat mate and best friend a make over, which spins her world around.Honestly the only thing that annoys me is how much she denies herself how she really feels towards him. However, without that conflict of denying her feelings we would have had a much shorter story. Loved the book and I recommend it to anyone who needs a rom com to distract themselves from stressful lives! less
