review 1: A little book, it is a window to the art, life, and essence of Bashō, a poet eternally tied to haiku form. It is praising without being maudlin, educational without being didactic, it is humorous and sad, and no longer than need be. True to the spirit of haiku, the poetic form central to this book and Bashō's life, Hirshfield's book is short, simple, but has left me with thoughts to ponder for a lifetime.
review 2: A wonderful intro into the origin and prominent advocate of the Haiku. Clouds come between friends only briefly- a wild goose migration. On a leafless branch, a crow's settling: autumn nightfall. The essence of a haiku is to find, in the face of the long familiar, something not yet said. Formal requirement
... mores of a haiku is to sound good. One needed worry if they have three or four, even five or seven extra syllables. Haiku reminds that a person should not become too fixed in a singular sense of what the self might consist of or know, or where it might reside. Wild seas- sweeping over the island of exiles, heaven's river of stars. less

A brief, illuminating and surprisingly moving study of the life and haiku of the poet Bashō.
