review 1: 2.5 stars - very zippy pace with a gripping plot; but the characters were either naive or so bland I could not muster one half baked shit to give, plus the ending was just stupid, especially the other's reaction too it. I did like Theo and Sophie, but they had hardly anything in the book; and background characters were introduced never to be seen again; or missed out for whole chapters before reappearing, apart from the twist character; who was not obvious at all. I liked the weight of the Price's story, and the pacing, but everything else felt half done and tepid.
review 2: Despite the mediocre rating, for the most part this book was good. I was engaged as a reader and kept wanting to discover the next clue along with the mother. Towards the end of the novel,
... more I started to get excited at the prospect of finally knowing. Only to be completely and utterly disappointed. It was as if the writer couldn't be bothered to create an effective endimg so she just forced this very short resolution at the end- completely ruining the entire story. Any elements of mystery or excitement that had been there before, were completely eradicated. less
