review 1: The first part of this book went really slow for me. Having loved "Under the Banner of Heaven", I thought this book would be similiar to that. While well written, the origins of Scientology were just boring for me. Yes, there were some pretty shady dealings, and from the documentation, LHR seemed in major need of psychiatry, but the continues accounts of suing and lies started to go stale. The book really picked up for me when I got to the Lisa McPhearson section, as it read a lot like a true crime novel. The modern day state of affairs and the overbearing cult like nature of the organization in modern times also passed the time. Overall the book as just really "fair".
review 2: I am sure that judged individually, some of these folks are very nice people. The
... more organization itself seems to have Orwellian control over its SeaOrg inner circle and out for money from both members and "meat" they find on the street who might be interested. I won't comment on their doctrine because it's kind of immaterial. People have a right to believe whatever they want to believe. I have to admit I knew most of what was revealed in this book, although not to the excruciating details this book went into. Some of those parts of the book were a little slow. I give the book 4 stars, Xenu 1 star, Scientology itself 0 stars. less

The author did a good job of being objective in the face of insanity.
