Book Review: These Broken Stars

Luxury spaceliner Icarus suddenly plummets from hyperspace into the nearest planet. Lilac LaRoux and Tarver Merendsen survive – alone. Lilac is the daughter of the richest man in the universe. Tarver comes from nothing, a cynical war hero. Both journey across the eerie deserted terrain for help. Everything changes when they uncover the truth.

The Starbound Trilogy: Three worlds. Three love stories. One enemy.

“When you have so little left to lose, even the tiniest loss feels like a body blow.”

It first started in Icarus, a spaceship with over 50,000 people aboard. Tarver Merendsen was a war hero while Lilac LaRoux was the daughter of the richest man in the galaxy. When the ship underwent an abnormality, they were the only ones who survived, crashing into an unknown and still terraforming planet.

This story was about survival. It was about being the only ones left on the planet, literally. It was also fast-paced right from the very start. I didn’t feel bored of reading because every scene was very interesting and exciting. I had mixed emotions because of those!

This book was also very unique. I’ve never read anything like it in the genre of Science Fiction. I also like the concept which introduced a very new, scientific world. It made me think and give theories about what will happen which I like very much from a book. And I’m proud to say that some of them are true! I’m a pretty good theorist, thank you very much! Haha!

And I really like the romance that occurred! As I hate instalove, I actually really love how they were developed to each other. But I hope it was not just because they’re the only man and woman on the WHOLE planet.

However, despite the ending being satisfying, it left me hanging. I still want more. You know what I mean? I feel like the ending was hurriedly done. Like, some questions were left unanswered or the explanations were quite confusing. Anyway, this is still the first book in the trilogy so let’s see on the succeeding books.

I love how this book has minimal characters but the main point was still delivered successfully. It gave highlight to the personalities of the characters themselves, as well.

The characters were also likable. Though I tend to dislike some of them at the start, I managed to like their personalities.

First is Tarver Merendsen. I like him from the very first chapter. From the start, you can tell he has character already. Though he has a strong personality, as he is a soldier trained to withstand the dangers of the unknown world, he still has a flaw. However, it was not as agitating as I was expecting. It was just the right amount.

Meanwhile, Lilac LaRoux has some personality issues. I like that she was not a damsel-in-distress the whole time but she tends to be VERY independent. And for that reason, I LOVE HER CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT, the most!

First, I would like to thank Ate Jess for the eBook copy, Ate Jen (Levicorpvs) and Ate Carmel (Bookablereads) for buddy reading the book with me! It was awesome for my first time and it was super fun, the discussion and that we almost have the same opinions! Let’s get to the second book guys!

NOW, THIS BOOK BECOMES ONE OF MY FAVORITE BOOKS! I really like the writing style, the idea of switching the point of views of the characters every chapter. I like how I can understand each side of the story. The gorgeous cover also really did make sense! Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner did a really good job in writing this book and so, my rating would be 5 STARS!

‘Till the next review! Bye~
